How to Add any Search Engine to the Firefox Search Bar

With the fantastic Firefox plugin Add to Search Bar you can easily add any search engine or field to your Firefox Search Bar. This brief tutorial will show you how to use it to make your searching life that much easier.

  1. Start by installing the Add to Search Bar Firefox plugin. Like most FF plugins, you’ll need to restart Firefox in order to start using it.
  2. Once Firefox has restarted, go to a web page that you frequently visit (like say.. I don’t know.. Simplehelp.net). Right-click (ctrl-click for single-button Mac folks) in the search field and choose Add to Search Bar…
  • A small pop-up will appear asking you what you’d like to call this search entry. Give it a name, and if you’re not happy with the default icon, you can choose one from your hard drive (png, gif and jpg all seem to work). Click OK.
  • And that search engine will now be available for you to use directly from the Firefox Search Bar.

  • If at any point in time you want to remove some of your custom search entries (or any of the defaults), select the Search Bar drop-down and choose Manage Search Engines…

  • Highlight the one(s) you want to delete, and click the Remove button. You can also re-order the search engines from here. Whichever entry you put at the top, will be your Firefox default.
  • Some search engines that I’ve found very helpful to add are Google Calendar (Gmail doesn’t seem to work for me), Wikipedia and Facebook. But of course, the sky is the limit.

10 Most Wanted iTunes Add-ons

iTunes is indeed a great music player and if you’re using iTunes as your primary music player then here are some add-ons to improve your iTunes experience.

iTunes Sync is a Windows only program that lets you sync iTunes with any other MP3 player, regardless of what brand it is.

Do you listen to music while browsing web? FoxyTunes allows you to control almost any media player (incl. iTunes) directly from the browser toolbar. Apart from standard buttons such as play, pause, volume controls etc, you also get one click access to lyrics search, artist bios, album art and so on. Works both with Firefox and Internet Explorer.

Conveniently share your music library with friends and let them stream your songs from wherever they are. You don’t have to be on the same network. Similarly you can access and stream music from friends.

  • NuTsie - Access your iTunes Library from any web-connected PC

nuTsie placeshifts your music to any web-connected PC and many mobile phones including Blackberry devices.Nutsie takes your iTunes library file and creates an online copy of it. At the end, you will be able to access your music library from any web enabled PC or mobile phone.

  • Moody - Organize your Music by Mood

This little iTunes addon lets you easily organize your music by mood. You can create shuffle mixes based purely on the “feel” rather than genre. Although it takes a little effort to tag your tracks it’s really worth it. See Moody video demo here.

Quick online backup and recovery service for your iTunes playlists. Playlist Vault will NOT backup music files but only your playlists so that you can recover them later in case they are accidentally erased.

If you have thousands of songs and need a smart app to generate playlists then try TheFilter. It’s quick and fully automated. In their own words : “Our Advanced Recommendation Technology makes great playlists quickly and easily from your music collection.”

G-Force is a really cool visualizer that works with most of the popular music players, including iTunes. I am not really sure about what you get with the paid version but the free one is pretty good as well. It starts with the GForce Premium ad but that disappears in about 5-10 seconds.
Bit-tunes is a continuously updated source that lists torrents for ‘Top 100′ music albums from the iTunes Music Store.

In case you’re on Last.fm, these two lightweight addons can send iTunes playing information to your Last.fm account. You can learn more about Last.fm here.
